What you need to know about our most common procedures
Ultrasound scan
Why it is performed: to assess internal organs (liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys), blood vessels, the thyroid gland, joints, and soft tissues.
What happens during the procedure: during the scan, you will lie on an examination couch, and the clinician will use a probe with gel to send ultrasound waves and view the images of your organs on a screen. The scan is painless and takes 15 to 30 minutes.
Endoscopy
Why it is performed: to diagnose digestive tract disorders where ulcers, inflammation, tumours, or other abnormalities are suspected.
What happens during the procedure: during the test, a thin, flexible tube (endoscope) with a light and camera is inserted through your mouth (gastroscopy) or back passage. The procedure allows for tissue samples (biopsies) to be taken for further analysis. An endoscopy can be performed under local anaesthetic or sedation/general anaesthetic, depending on your preference and the type of investigation.
Laboratory tests
Why it is performed: to assess overall health, diagnose conditions, and monitor the effectiveness of treatment.
What happens during the procedure: a blood sample is usually taken from a vein in your arm. The procedure takes only a few minutes and causes minimal discomfort.
