Knee pain, swelling, instability or limited movement can be caused by damage to the menisci, ligaments or cartilage, degenerative joint diseases or injuries. Left untreated, these problems can make walking, sport and everyday activities difficult.
At Baltic American Clinic, knee joint diseases and injuries are diagnosed and treated. Knee arthroscopy, cruciate ligament reconstruction, surgical treatment of kneecap (patellar) instability and knee replacement are performed according to medical indications.
Identifying the causes of pain, swelling, instability and movement problems.
Assessment of damage to the menisci, ligaments and other joint structures.
Minimally invasive surgical treatment when needed.
An individual plan from diagnosis to restoring movement.
When should you seek help for knee problems?
- Your knee hurts when walking, climbing stairs or playing sport.
- The joint swells after physical activity or an injury.
- Your knee catches, locks or cannot be fully straightened.
- You feel instability or your knee “gives way”.
- Severe pain and swelling appeared after a sports injury.
- Pain troubles you at night or limits your normal movement.
- Previous treatment has not helped.
Which knee joint diseases and injuries are treated?
Meniscus injuries
Can cause pain, swelling, catching and limited movement. Not every meniscus tear needs surgery.
Anterior cruciate ligament tears
Often occur after a sudden change of direction or a sports injury. Treatment depends on instability, activity level and associated injuries.
Kneecap (patellar) instability
Recurrent kneecap dislocations may require specialised investigation and reconstructive treatment.
Knee osteoarthritis
Changes in the joint cartilage and other structures can cause pain, stiffness and limited movement.
Tendon and cartilage injuries
Treatment is chosen according to the nature of the injury and the patient’s functional needs.
How are diagnosis and treatment carried out?
The range of knee movement, ligament stability, swelling, painful areas and gait are assessed.
Depending on the indications, X-rays, MRI, ultrasound or other tests are ordered.
Medicines, physiotherapy, adjusting the load, orthopaedic aids, joint aspiration or injections may be used.
If needed, arthroscopic surgery, ligament reconstruction, kneecap stabilisation procedures or joint replacement are performed.
After injuries and operations, gradually restoring movement, muscle strength and stability is important.
How to prepare for the consultation
Bring any scan images and reports you have. If you had an injury, it is important to remember how it happened, whether swelling appeared immediately and whether you could put weight on your leg.
When is urgent help needed?
Urgent assessment is needed if, after an injury, you cannot put weight on your leg, the knee is obviously deformed or locked, or sensation or circulation in the limb is impaired.
A joint that suddenly becomes red, hot and very painful, especially together with a fever, may indicate an infection.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Does a meniscus tear always need surgery?
No. The decision depends on the type of tear, symptoms, age and other changes in the joint.
Can you walk with a torn anterior cruciate ligament?
Some patients can walk, but the knee may remain unstable. Safe activity and treatment should be discussed with a doctor.
Does knee osteoarthritis always end in joint replacement?
No. In many patients, symptoms can be managed with conservative measures. Joint replacement is considered when the disease severely limits quality of life.
Does a PRP injection restore worn cartilage?
There is no reliable evidence that a PRP injection restores cartilage destroyed by advanced osteoarthritis. Any possible benefit for symptoms depends on the condition and the indications for treatment.
When can I return to sport after knee surgery?
This depends on the operation performed, healing and the results of functional tests. After ligament reconstruction, returning to intensive sport often takes many months.
Price of treatment for knee joint diseases and injuries
Prices of consultations, tests, injections, arthroscopic, reconstructive and other knee operations are set by the Baltic American Clinic price list in force.
The extent of the operation, the need for additional services and the expected costs are discussed during the consultation.
