Would you like to give birth at Baltic American Clinic?
The first step is a consultation with an obstetrician-gynaecologist. The doctor will assess how your pregnancy is progressing and discuss the options for giving birth at Baltic American Clinic and your further individual birth plan.
Book an obstetrician-gynaecologist consultation →An individually planned birth
Your birth at Baltic American Clinic is planned individually with the obstetrician-gynaecologist who looks after your pregnancy at the clinic. This means the doctor already knows how your pregnancy has progressed, your state of health and your individual situation.
During antenatal care you discuss together how the birth is expected to go, your expectations, the pain relief options and possible scenarios in case labour starts earlier than planned, at night or at the weekend, or specific complications arise.
So before the birth you will know what to do in different situations, when to come to the clinic and how medical care would be organised if the course of labour changes.
If your pregnancy care started at another healthcare facility but you plan to give birth at Baltic American Clinic, your pregnancy care must continue at the clinic from the 30th week of pregnancy at the latest.
Natural birth
When a natural birth is possible, the midwife and the doctor monitor the progress of labour and the condition of the mother and the baby. The mother is helped to choose a suitable birthing position and breathing and relaxation techniques.
Your partner can be with you during a natural birth. The private setting lets you share this time together, keeping the closeness that matters to a family while a medical team is ready at hand.
Pain relief during labour
Labour pain and its intensity differ for every woman, so Baltic American Clinic offers different methods of pain relief in labour. The possible methods can be discussed before the birth, and the most suitable one is chosen according to the course of labour, your wishes and your state of health.
Epidural anaesthesia
Epidural anaesthesia is one of the regional anaesthesia methods used to relieve labour pain. Whether it is suitable is assessed individually according to the course of labour and the woman’s condition.
Spinal anaesthesia
Spinal anaesthesia is a regional anaesthesia method that numbs the lower part of the body. The medical team assesses whether it is needed and suitable in the particular situation.
Inhaled pain relief
Inhaled pain relief, also known as “laughing gas”, may be used during labour. It is an inhaled method of pain relief that helps to reduce the sensation of labour pain.
Analgesics
If needed, analgesics may be given to relieve labour pain. The specific method of pain relief is chosen individually and discussed with the mother.
Caesarean section
Baltic American Clinic performs planned caesarean sections. The need for a caesarean section, the possibility of choosing one, preparation and the course of the operation are discussed individually with the obstetrician-gynaecologist.
When deciding on the mode of birth, the course of the pregnancy, the health of the mother and the baby, the woman’s choice and other individual circumstances are taken into account.
Partners are not present in the operating theatre during a caesarean section.
Safety during birth and the team of specialists
During childbirth, privacy and comfort matter, but the safety of the mother and the baby comes first. That is why at Baltic American Clinic the birth is looked after by a highly qualified team of specialists, ready to provide the medical care needed in each particular situation.
The specialists who take part in the birth and look after the mother and the baby:
- Obstetrician-gynaecologist – manages the course of labour, assesses the condition of the mother and the baby and makes the necessary medical decisions.
- Midwife – stays with you during labour, monitors the condition of the mother and the baby and helps at the different stages of labour.
- Anaesthesiologist – if needed, chooses and provides a suitable method of anaesthesia or pain relief.
- Neonatologist – assesses the newborn’s condition and provides medical care to the baby if needed.
The clinic has a delivery room equipped specifically for childbirth and all the medical equipment needed for care during birth. The condition of the mother and the baby is monitored continuously during labour, and if the course of labour changes, the team of specialists can promptly make the medical decisions the situation requires.
After the birth – privacy and time for the family
After the birth, the mother and the newborn stay in the Baltic American Clinic room of their choice. You can choose a standard, superior or VIP room. The rooms are for one or two people and have private bathrooms.
If the family wishes, the clinic can, where possible, also arrange accommodation for a family member nearby. This way the first hours and days with your baby can be spent in a calm, private setting.
During the postnatal period, healthcare for the mother and the newborn continues, and the mother has time to rest and recover.
Meals during your stay at the clinic
The clinic has its own restaurant, “Le Jardin”, where food is prepared daily from fresh ingredients, taking into account each patient’s individual needs and the diet prescribed by the doctor.
Inpatients have their meals served directly to their room, so after the birth you do not need to worry about everyday chores and can devote more time to rest and to your baby.
Breastfeeding support and postnatal care
Many new questions may arise in the first days after the birth, so support does not end once the baby is born. Mothers receive individual breastfeeding support and help with questions that come up during the postnatal period.
In case of lactostasis – milk stasis in the breasts – Baltic American Clinic provides specialised help. Timely help makes it possible to deal with the problem and reduces the risk of complications.
