Which conditions are treated?
Wrist and hand injuries
Bone fractures and injuries to joints and soft tissues are assessed. Depending on the indications, immobilisation or surgical treatment is used.
Trigger finger
A problem with how a tendon glides can make a finger catch painfully. Treatment may be conservative or surgical.
Wrist and finger cysts
Some cysts can cause discomfort or pressure, or restrict movement. Surgical removal is considered according to the indications.
Osteoarthritis at the base of the thumb
It can cause pain when gripping objects. In advanced cases, a trapeziectomy may be considered.
Tendon and other soft-tissue injuries
Treatment depends on the structure that is damaged and on the loss of function.
How are diagnosis and treatment carried out?
Your symptoms and how long you have had them are discussed, as well as your work, repetitive movements and any injuries.
Finger mobility, tendon function, grip strength, sensation and painful areas are assessed.
If needed, an X-ray, ultrasound or MRI is ordered, or nerve conduction studies if nerve damage is suspected.
Treatment may include splints, medication, injections, rehabilitation or surgical procedures.
After surgery or an injury, individual exercises, splints and further follow-up care may be needed.
How to prepare for the consultation
Bring any test results you have and discharge summaries from previous operations. It is important for the doctor to know which movements trigger your symptoms and whether the problem interferes with your work.
When is urgent care needed?
Seek urgent care if, after an injury, a finger or the hand is deformed, you cannot move your fingers, sensation is impaired, the hand feels cold, or there is a deep wound with possible tendon or nerve damage.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Does trigger finger always need surgery?
No. In some cases conservative treatment or an injection helps. Surgery is considered if the symptoms persist.
Is a lump on the wrist always dangerous?
No. Some lumps are benign, but their nature must be assessed by a doctor.
Can numbness in the hand be related to the wrist?
Yes. One possible cause is a compressed nerve at the wrist. However, numbness can also be caused by other conditions.
Can I go back to work straight after hand surgery?
It depends on the operation and the type of work you do. Physical strain on the hands often has to be limited for a while.
Does a wrist fracture always need surgery?
No. The decision depends on the position and stability of the fracture, any damage to the joint and other factors.
