Paediatric specialists

Consultations with paediatric specialists provide a thorough assessment of the health of babies, children and teenagers when the help of a doctor from a specific field of medicine is needed. At Baltic American Clinic, children are seen by specialists in paediatric cardiology, neurology, endocrinology, pulmonology, allergology, ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology, and ultrasound examinations for children are also performed.

When should you see a paediatric specialist?

A consultation with a paediatric specialist may be needed when symptoms persist or keep coming back, a problem with a particular organ system is suspected, or an illness that has already been diagnosed needs monitoring.

We recommend making an appointment if:

  • Your child has recurring complaints whose cause remains unclear.
  • You notice problems with growth, puberty or neurological development.
  • Your child suffers from headaches, dizziness or other neurological symptoms.
  • There are heart rhythm disturbances, heart murmurs or other possible changes in heart function.
  • Respiratory infections keep recurring, a cough persists or there is wheezing.
  • Allergic reactions, skin rashes or other possible signs of allergy appear.
  • You notice vision problems, red eyes or other symptoms of eye disease.
  • Ear, nose or throat problems keep recurring.
  • Your child needs an ultrasound examination adapted for children.

If you are not sure which specialist to see, you can first book a consultation with a family doctor.

Consultations with paediatric specialists

Paediatric cardiologist

A paediatric cardiologist diagnoses and treats diseases of the heart and blood vessels in children and assesses heart function and its changes at different stages of a child’s growth.

We recommend seeing a paediatric cardiologist if:

  • A doctor has found a heart murmur.
  • Your child complains of palpitations or an irregular heartbeat.
  • Unusual shortness of breath, weakness or chest pain occurs during physical exertion.
  • A congenital heart defect is suspected or has been diagnosed.
  • A heart condition that has already been diagnosed needs monitoring.

Depending on medical indications, an echocardiogram (heart ultrasound) and other tests of heart function may be performed.

Paediatric neurologist

A paediatric neurologist assesses the nervous system, neurological development and nervous-system-related health problems in babies, children and teenagers.

A consultation may be needed because of:

  • Recurring or severe headaches.
  • Seizures or suspected epileptic fits.
  • Problems with movement, coordination or balance.
  • Delayed motor development in a baby.
  • Changes in muscle tone.
  • Other suspected neurological disorders.

During the consultation the doctor assesses the child’s neurological condition and, if needed, recommends additional tests or further monitoring.

Paediatric endocrinologist

A paediatric endocrinologist diagnoses and treats diseases of the hormonal system and disorders related to growth, puberty and metabolism.

We recommend an appointment because of:

  • Slow or unusually fast growth.
  • Early or delayed puberty.
  • Thyroid disorders.
  • Suspected or diagnosed diabetes.
  • Hormonal imbalance and metabolic disorders.
  • Monitoring of other endocrine diseases.

The doctor assesses the child’s growth and development indicators and, if needed, orders hormonal, laboratory or other tests.

Paediatric pulmonologist

A paediatric pulmonologist advises on diseases of the respiratory system and helps find the causes of persistent or recurring breathing problems.

A consultation may be needed when:

  • Your child has a long-lasting or recurring cough.
  • There is wheezing or recurring episodes of shortness of breath.
  • Bronchial asthma is suspected or has been diagnosed.
  • Lower respiratory tract infections recur frequently.
  • A chronic respiratory disease needs monitoring.

Depending on the child’s age and symptoms, the doctor may recommend lung function or other diagnostic tests.

Paediatric allergologist

A paediatric allergologist helps find the causes of allergic diseases, assesses the nature of allergic reactions and chooses suitable treatment or a plan for further monitoring.

We recommend an appointment because of:

  • Recurring skin rashes, hives or itching.
  • Suspected food allergy.
  • Allergic rhinitis, sneezing or a blocked nose.
  • Allergic reactions to insect stings or medicines.
  • Atopic dermatitis.
  • Other suspected allergic diseases.

If needed, the doctor recommends allergy tests and advises on how to control the symptoms and avoid exposure to the identified allergens.

Paediatric ophthalmologist

An eye doctor who sees children assesses the development of vision and the condition of the eyes and diagnoses eye diseases in children.

A consultation may be needed if:

  • Your child squints, looks at things from very close up or complains of poor vision.
  • You notice a squint (strabismus).
  • Your child has red, watery or uncomfortable eyes.
  • Short-sightedness, long-sightedness or astigmatism is suspected.
  • A previously diagnosed vision problem needs monitoring.
  • A more thorough assessment of a baby’s or child’s eyes has been recommended.

The doctor chooses vision and eye tests appropriate for the child’s age and gives recommendations on treatment or vision correction.

Paediatric otorhinolaryngologist (ENT)

An ear, nose and throat doctor sees children with diseases of the upper airways, ears, nose and throat.

We recommend an appointment because of:

  • Frequently recurring ear infections.
  • Reduced hearing or suspected hearing problems.
  • A constantly blocked nose or difficulty breathing through the nose.
  • Enlarged adenoids or tonsils.
  • Recurring throat infections.
  • Snoring or suspected breathing problems during sleep.

The doctor examines the ears, nose and throat, recommends additional tests if needed and draws up a treatment plan.

Paediatric surgery and ultrasound diagnostics

A doctor specialising in paediatric surgery can perform ultrasound examinations that help assess the condition of a child’s organs and tissues.

An ultrasound examination may be recommended when a more detailed assessment is needed of:

  • The abdominal organs.
  • The urinary system.
  • Soft tissues or palpable lumps.
  • Other organs and structures, depending on the purpose of the specific examination.

Ultrasound is a non-invasive examination that does not use ionising radiation. The type of examination and the preparation depend on the area examined and the child’s age.

What happens during a consultation with a paediatric specialist?

During the consultation the doctor discusses the child’s symptoms, past illnesses, medical history and what the parents or guardians have noticed.

Depending on the reason for the consultation, the doctor performs a specialised examination. If needed, additional laboratory or instrumental tests are ordered and consultations with other specialists are recommended.

After assessing the child’s condition and the available test results, the doctor gives recommendations on treatment or monitoring, explains the next steps and whether a follow-up consultation is needed.

Which tests may be performed?

The tests needed depend on the child’s symptoms and the field of medicine concerned.

The following may be performed or recommended:

  • Echocardiogram. Ultrasound assessment of the structure and function of the heart.
  • Brain ultrasound in babies. Assessment of brain structures through the open fontanelle.
  • Ultrasound of internal organs and soft tissues. Assessment of the condition of organs and tissues.
  • Lung function tests. Assessment of how the respiratory system works, depending on the child’s age and ability to perform the test.
  • Vision and eye tests. Assessment of visual acuity, refraction and other eye functions.
  • Laboratory tests. Blood and other tests when they are needed to confirm a diagnosis or monitor the course of an illness.

The consulting doctor decides which tests are needed.

How to prepare for the consultation

In most cases no special preparation is needed.

Before the visit, we recommend that you:

  • Bring earlier test results and doctors’ conclusions if they are not in the “E. sveikata” (e-health) system.
  • Know the names and doses of the medicines your child takes.
  • Write down when the symptoms started, how often they recur and what makes them worse or better.
  • Tell the doctor about any diagnosed allergies and chronic illnesses.
  • Prepare the questions you would like to discuss during the consultation.

If a specific instrumental test is planned, additional preparation may be needed, so it is important to find out about it in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Is a referral needed for a consultation with a paediatric specialist?

No, a referral is not required. Baltic American Clinic is a private healthcare institution, so having a doctor’s referral does not change the price of a paid consultation.

Can we book directly with a paediatric cardiologist, neurologist or another specialist?

Yes. You can choose the specialist you want and book a consultation online.

What should we do if we do not know which specialist our child needs?

We recommend seeing a family doctor first. After assessing the child’s symptoms and general health, the doctor will help determine which specialist’s consultation is needed.

Do the specialists also see babies?

Some specialists also see babies, depending on their age and health problem. If you would like to book a consultation for a baby, call +370 5 234 2020 and we will help you find out which specialist is best to see.

Can all tests be done in one visit?

Some tests can be done during the consultation, but this depends on the type of test and the medical indications. Sometimes an additional visit is needed.

Can we come with test results from another healthcare institution?

Yes. Earlier test results and doctors’ conclusions help the specialist assess the child’s health and decide on further investigations.

Can the doctor prescribe treatment and a follow-up consultation?

Yes. Depending on the diagnosis, the doctor may prescribe treatment, give recommendations and decide whether a follow-up consultation is needed.

Does a parent have to attend the consultation?

Consultations for children follow the rules on age and legal representation. Younger children come to the consultation with a parent or legal representative.
