Do you need a gynaecological operation?
The first step is a consultation with an obstetrician-gynaecologist. The doctor will assess your condition and any test results you already have, discuss the treatment options and, if an operation is needed, draw up a further treatment plan.
Book a gynaecologist consultation →When may a gynaecological operation be needed?
A gynaecological operation may be one of the treatment options when changes of the uterus, cervix, ovaries, vagina or other gynaecological changes have been found.
It is advisable to see an obstetrician-gynaecologist for examination and treatment if:
- you have heavy, prolonged or painful periods;
- you bleed between periods or after sexual intercourse;
- you have recurring or constant pain in the lower abdomen or pelvic area;
- a uterine fibroid has been found;
- an ovarian cyst has been found;
- changes in the uterine cavity or the cervix have been found;
- you have urinary incontinence;
- another gynaecological condition has been found for which the doctor recommends surgical treatment.
A diagnosis alone does not necessarily mean you will need an operation. The treatment method is chosen individually after the doctor’s consultation and the necessary tests.
Which gynaecological operations are performed at Baltic American Clinic?
Hysteroscopy
Hysteroscopy is a procedure in which a thin optical instrument is passed through the cervix into the uterine cavity. With it the doctor can examine the uterine cavity and assess any changes in it.
Diagnostic gynaecological laparoscopy
Diagnostic laparoscopy allows the doctor to examine the pelvic organs through small incisions in the abdominal wall and to assess more accurately the cause of gynaecological symptoms or changes that have been found.
Gynaecological laparoscopy
A laparoscopic operation is performed through small incisions in the abdominal wall using special optical and surgical equipment. Various gynaecological operations can be performed this way; the doctor decides individually whether they are needed and their extent.
Laparoscopic ovarian cyst surgery
During the operation the ovarian cyst is removed laparoscopically. The doctor decides whether the operation is needed and its extent, taking into account the nature, size and location of the cyst and other individual circumstances.
Removal of uterine fibroids
During the operation a uterine fibroid – a benign growth of the muscle tissue of the uterus – is removed. Not every fibroid that is found needs surgery, so the doctor decides individually whether surgical treatment is needed and its extent.
Cervical conisation
During conisation a cone-shaped piece of cervical tissue containing the changes that have been found is removed. The doctor decides whether the procedure is needed and its extent after reviewing the test results.
Cervical plastic surgery (Emmet method)
The operation corrects anatomical changes of the cervix. The doctor decides individually whether the operation is needed and the extent of the correction required.
Cervical biopsy
During a biopsy a small sample of cervical tissue is taken and sent for examination. The test helps the doctor to assess more accurately the cervical changes that have been found.
Removal of cervical canal polyps
During the procedure polyps that have formed in the cervical canal are removed. If needed, the removed tissue is sent for histological examination.
Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus)
Hysterectomy is a more extensive gynaecological operation. The doctor decides whether it is needed, the surgical method and its extent, taking into account the diagnosis, your state of health and other individual circumstances.
Vaginal and perineal plastic surgery
During the operation the tissues of the vagina and perineum are corrected. The doctor decides individually during the consultation whether the operation is needed and its extent.
Correction of urinary incontinence using the TOT method
TOT is a surgical treatment method used in certain cases of urinary incontinence. The doctor decides whether this method is suitable for you after assessing the type of incontinence, your condition and your test results.
Abrasion (curettage)
During the procedure part of the lining of the uterine cavity is removed. Abrasion may be performed for diagnostic or treatment purposes when recommended by the doctor.
Opening of a Bartholin’s gland cyst
The procedure is performed when a Bartholin’s gland cyst has formed. The cyst is opened so that its contents can be removed and the symptoms related to the cyst reduced.
Opening of a Bartholin’s gland abscess
During the procedure an abscess that has formed in the area of the Bartholin’s gland is opened and its contents are removed. The doctor prescribes further care depending on your condition.
Laparotomy
Laparotomy is a surgical method in which the abdominal and pelvic organs are reached through an incision in the abdominal wall. The doctor decides whether this method is needed for a particular operation.
Hymen restoration surgery
A surgical procedure in which the tissue of the hymen is restored. The options and extent of the procedure are discussed individually during the doctor’s consultation.
The need for an operation, the method and its extent are decided by the doctor after assessing your diagnosis, state of health and test results.
Preparing for a gynaecological operation
Preparation depends on the specific operation planned and your state of health.
During the consultation or before the planned operation, the doctor will tell you which tests need to be done and how to prepare for the procedure. If you take medicines or food supplements, have allergies or chronic diseases, or have had operations before, it is important to tell your doctor.
Always follow the doctor’s individual instructions for preparing for surgery exactly.
After a gynaecological operation
The postoperative period depends on the operation performed, its extent and your individual condition.
Depending on the operation performed, postoperative nursing care and a stay in the clinic’s inpatient unit may be needed. The doctor will decide when you can leave the clinic based on the operation performed and how you feel.
Before you leave, you will receive the doctor’s recommendations for further recovery and, if needed, further medical follow-up.
Frequently asked questions
Is a gynaecological operation always necessary when a fibroid or ovarian cyst is found?
No. Finding a fibroid or an ovarian cyst does not mean that an operation will necessarily be needed. The doctor will assess your condition, test results and other relevant circumstances and discuss the possible treatment methods.
Do I need to see an obstetrician-gynaecologist before a gynaecological operation?
Yes. The consultation is the first step in planning treatment. The doctor will assess your condition and the tests you already have. If surgical treatment is recommended, the operation and how to prepare for it will be discussed with you.
Will I need additional tests before the operation?
This depends on the operation planned and your state of health. During the consultation the doctor will tell you which tests you need and when to have them.
Will I need to stay at the clinic after a gynaecological operation?
This depends on the operation performed, its extent and how you feel afterwards. For some patients shorter care is enough; in other cases a stay in the clinic’s inpatient unit is recommended. The doctor will discuss with you how long you will need to stay at the clinic.
Can I choose my room?
If an inpatient stay is needed after the operation, you can choose the room category that suits you. Whether a particular room is available depends on occupancy, so it is worth discussing your preference in advance.
Does the price of the operation include anaesthesia and the inpatient stay?
The price of the operation and the whole treatment depends on the extent of the operation you need and on additional services. Anaesthesia, the inpatient stay, postoperative nursing care and other necessary services may be charged separately. It is advisable to discuss the planned scope of services and the make-up of the price before the operation.
Where do I start if a gynaecological operation has already been recommended at another healthcare facility?
Book a consultation with an obstetrician-gynaecologist and bring the results of tests already done and the conclusions of earlier consultations. The doctor will review the information, assess your condition and discuss the further treatment plan.
Price of gynaecological surgery
The final price of a gynaecological operation depends on the specific operation, its extent, your state of health and any additional services needed.
When the operation is being planned, its extent and the expected additional services are discussed with you in advance. Depending on the individual situation, anaesthesia, the inpatient stay, postoperative nursing care and other necessary medical services may be charged in addition to the price of the operation.
The final amount is calculated according to the services actually provided to you and the Baltic American Clinic prices in force at the time.
