Alcohol addiction is a disease with many faces. It is important to understand that this illness does not discriminate on the basis of education, social status, profession, financial position or other criteria, and that seeking help is not a sign of weakness, but of strength.
There are a number of warning signs indicative of risky or harmful alcohol consumption, or of alcohol dependence. One such sign is a strong craving to drink, where a person tends to seek out opportunities and reasons to do so. Another sign is when, the day after consuming a large amount of alcohol, a person feels unwell and experiences a renewed strong urge to drink in order to relieve these symptoms. Feelings of guilt, shame and remorse following episodes of drinking may also indicate dependence. A desire to conceal one’s alcohol consumption, a narrowing of other interests, and neglect of important responsibilities are further signs that may point to a problem with alcohol use.
For patients experiencing problems with alcohol use, our clinic offers two attractive service packages, which include not only psychologist consultations but also a range of other services that have a positive effect on a person’s psychological wellbeing. This package of services is designed to build psychological resilience and restore emotional wellbeing. The psychologist consultations focus on helping patients gain a better understanding of themselves, their feelings and their needs, and on strengthening their sense of self. The aim of the psychologist consultations is to help individuals with alcohol dependence recognise the internal difficulties they are experiencing and to resolve problems arising in their personal relationships.
Psychologist consultations focus on the following aspects:
- Gaining a better awareness and expression of one’s feelings and needs, and strengthening one’s sense of self; restoring self-confidence and faith in life.
- Letting go of excessive self-demand, perfectionism and the need for control; learning a supportive and compassionate attitude towards oneself; developing the ability to be satisfied with imperfect outcomes.
- Resolving problems arising in close relationships – expressing one’s needs and setting boundaries; achieving emotional separation and detachment from one’s partner, i.e., moving away from the roles of controlling pursuer or helpless victim.
- Identifying hidden character traits, not consciously recognised, that are directly linked to alcohol dependence – including subconscious feelings of helplessness, anger, self-reproach and guilt – and working towards accepting and changing them;
- Enabling patients to choose different, constructive behaviour in place of destructive alcohol consumption that damages themselves and their lives, and to move in the direction of building a meaningful life.
This programme is unique in that the services offered are aimed not only at improving psychological wellbeing, but also at restoring good physical health. A pleasant environment surrounded by nature, together with professional and caring staff, will help patients with addiction to experience a comfortable atmosphere that understands them and is dedicated to helping them.
