Big toes deviating outwards (Lat. Hallux valgus) affect around a third of people of various ages worldwide. Although the issue may initially seem purely cosmetic, if left uncorrected, it disrupts daily life. Not only does the choice of footwear become limited, but over time, pain can accompany every single step.

On the other hand, with the help of innovative medicine, the problem of a protruding bunion is easily resolvable – the most important thing is finding the time to consult a doctor.

High heels are not the only culprit

Bunions are considered one of the most common foot deformities. Although most frequently associated with wearing uncomfortable, excessively narrow footwear and high heels, the big toe can also shift out of position due to other factors.

One of these is genetics: the elasticity of connective tissue, foot geometry and anatomy, such as foot width and arch height. This hereditary pathology is usually noticed quite early – as early as adolescence. In women, Hallux valgus is more common due to hormonal changes, such as during pregnancy.

The big toe can also deviate outwards due to physical, lifestyle or occupational factors: individuals who are less active, have weaker muscles or are overweight, as well as those who work standing up or experience other continuous stress on their feet, encounter this pathology much more frequently.

Correction should not be delayed

As the big toe deviates towards the other toes, the first metatarsal bone initially shifts in the opposite direction, widening the foot. The protruding bunion becomes visible to others when wearing open footwear in summer. During the colder season, due to constant friction in shoes, it can become red, swollen and tender.

However, the problem is not merely cosmetic. Feet can tire more quickly when walking, and the correction of the deformed foot joint should not be delayed for other reasons as well.

If the position of the big toe is left uncorrected, uncomfortable pressure, pain or burning will eventually be felt under the other metatarsal bones. This can occur both when walking and sleeping. Furthermore, a severely deviated big toe often begins to displace the second toe from its position, increasing the risk of another joint dislocation.

Additionally, Hallux valgus can lead to changes in the surrounding tissues and be accompanied by painful joint inflammation, such as bursitis or arthritis.

An easily resolvable problem

Unfortunately, conservative treatments, such as orthotic insoles, toe separators or wide-fitting footwear, only relieve the unpleasant symptoms but do not usually resolve the underlying problem itself.

At present, the only effective way to treat an established big toe deformity at any stage is surgery. There is no need to fear it: the procedure is performed under anaesthesia, making it completely painless for the patient.

At the Baltijos ir Amerikos terapijos ir chirurgijos klinika, consultations and corrective surgeries for bunions are carried out by Julius Janavičius, an orthopaedic and trauma surgeon with many years of experience in the field of foot surgery.

The procedure is performed in the clinic’s operating theatres, which meet the highest standards, and the recovery period after surgery is spent in premium, hotel-standard private rooms.

A protruding, red and painful bunion can leave even the most graceful Cinderella without her slipper.
